Science by the Pint

Curious about the exciting research in ecology, evolution, and marine biology happening at UCSB? Look no further than Science by the Pint (SBTP), a weekly winter event at Draughtsmen Aleworks. Here, UCSB graduate students share their captivating research in a relaxed and engaging setting—perfectly paired with your favorite pint. Even better, $1.50 from every beer sold supports the Undergraduate Research Symposium in April, a vital opportunity for undergraduates to experience presenting at a symposium for the first time.

From frog disease ecology to forest wildfire management, the evolution of silk, and how fish handle stress, SBTP showcases an incredible diversity of topics, sparking curiosity and fostering dialogue. These events create a unique space for community members to connect with scientists and for graduate students to refine their science communication skills.

Now in its third year, the collaboration between Draughtsmen Aleworks and the Undergraduate Research Symposium Committee has made SBTP a beloved tradition among UCSB graduate students and locals alike. It’s more than just a night out—it’s a chance to learn, connect, and support the next generation of scientists.

Chemical Conversations: Competition and cooperation in the microbial world

Zach Reitz - Postdoctoral Researcher

Microbes make many natural products that shape their interactions with other microbes, with the environment, and with multicellular life. I'll go through a bunch of cool examples, then zoom in on my favorite molecules, iron-scavenging siderophores!

Why should we care about what coral reef fish eat and what eats them?

Madeleine Ward

Corals reefs hold an immense diversity of species and all those species eat and excrete nutrients forming a complex food web. The types of food and nutrients fish, in-particular,  fish eat and excrete plays in important role in shaping the community structure and promoting reliance against disturbance.
